Among the spectacular views I have photographed in Porto, the Escadas dos Guindais passage offers a breathtaking hillside perspective of the city’s historical center, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. The centerpiece of this magnificent view is the Dom Luis I Bridge.

Originally presented as a design by Gustav Eiffel, it was eventually built from the plans of one of his disciples, Theophile Seyrig. Its metal arch design bares a striking similarity, in part, to the Eiffel Tower.

The hillsides of Porto present other delights which are “carved” in dwellings, hidden cafes and unexpected pathways that often provide its visual gifts. It is an urban walker’s dream.
